Beginnings

Beginning our 20th year, Multicomp, Inc. D.B.A. LabelOnce Corporation, is a private corporation resulting from a label business the founder started in 1988. The original mission of the company was to produce and market non-paper labels; namely, an erasable label product for 3.5" floppy disks that would eliminate the built-in obsolescence of standard paper labels. Since then we have gone on to develop numerous variations on the theme.

Eliminating paper as the writing surface

Prior to forming Multicomp, Inc., the founder developed an erasable method that, ironically, utilized permanent marker ink. He accomplished this by eliminating paper as the writing surface and replacing it with a stain resistant film. After archiving and testing different markers, ink colors, and erasers, he discovered a combination of materials that could be erased indefinitely without "ghosting." The final erasable product was a radical departure from the age-old technology of dry erase markers and bulky erasers.

Is this a can of tennis balls?

The founder announced the product via direct response ads placed in MacWorld and MacUser magazines beginning in August of 1988. The first product was shipped to purchasers in the fall of 1988, and it consisted of erasable labels for 3.5" floppy disks, two extra fine point Sharpie® permanent markers, and a nonabrasive Eberhard-Faber® Jet Eraser. Each product also contained a 2 ounce bottle of alcohol based erasing fluid, cotton wipes, and Avery® removable color code stickers. A tennis ball style container housed the contents.

An award for LabelOnce

In January 1989 erasable label starter kits were exhibited and sold to computer users at the MacWorld Expo in San Francisco. Also in 1989 the company chose "LabelOnce" as the official trademark since the labels are intended to be left permanently in place. The product was well received, and the editors of MacUser magazine named LabelOnce to their list of "Top 20 Accessories" in the December 1989 issue.

National retail exposure

The first major national retailer to offer the LabelOnce erasable label for 3.5 floppy disk was CompUSA in January 1991. In the eighteen years hence, the company expanded the LabelOnce line to cover different erasable label formats including file folders, ring binders, food containers, magnets, and much more.

Expanded Distribution

In October 2009 Jokari entered into a partnership with LabelOnce whereby Jokari will manufacturer and distribute the LabelOnce products and increase distribution of the popular labels.

Although the package graphics have changed throughout the years, LabelOnce starter kits still contain a permanent marker, nonabrasive eraser, and stain-resistant paperless labels.
